Notes about Working in the Wiki

Working in the Wiki is like using a shared resource. The nature of the Wiki is that anyone can edit any of the pages at any time. The key thing is that each edit is tracked so you can always roll back any edit that you do.

If you want to find out more about how to work in MediaWiki you can see the following resources

  1. Working in MediaWiki - an Article Start to Finish
  2. Developing Content in the eXtension MediaWiki

There are a few things that will make working in the Wiki easier, and those are listed below.

Adding Content

To add content to an area, use the EDIT button under the VIEWS box to the right. As you add content, be sure to finish your edits by filing in the Summary area with a general description of your edits. Your edits will be automatically attributed to your user so you don't have to annotate that.

Use the spell check and preview to help your editing.

Adding Pages

You may find that the area you are editing is best suited to it's own page. For instance, if you are working on an article on making a 5 course dinner, you may decide to have each course on it's own page so that at a later date, you could use each page independently. You may decide to use the soup for another article on a 7 course meal. Putting it on it's own page would make it easier to link to other articles.

A good litmus test might be to add pages whose content could be a stand alone article in itself, or that could contribute to many other articles and not just the current one.

Should you want to add a new page, click on NEW PAGE under the NAVIGATION box to the right

Using the Discussion

The Discussion area (on the VIEWS menu to the right) is the area where your community can comment on the content you have added. It's a good place to ask questions about the content to the author and others. You may choose to use this area before performing a major edit where you significantly change the content.
