Conferences in Real Life with a Second Life component

  • Several coming up that seem like good candidates if we can find support
  • 4-H National Conference - October 24-29, 2009. Proposals are closed, but we could try to get involved
  • Extension National Meeting in St. Louis, October 20-23, 2009. Proposals are due June 10.

Ideas

  • Speaker with PowerPoint
  • Audio stream from conference
  • Chat box carries speaker's presentation in text

Other....

  • Stream Video into SL so speaker can be viewed as in RL setting
  • More tech expertise
  • More bandwidth
  • way for SL audience to ask questions
  • way for presenter to watch SL as well
  • Keynote speakers to SL, as well as concurrent (less risky) sessions as well
  • Who do we have available that will be at the 4-H Conference as keynote?
  • Need to look for opportunities
  • 125 people in the Extension in SL Facebook group
  • Guessing we might have people who might be interested in participating in the conference in SL
    • Duane Thomas: ..that would be the case with me..budget cut 50%
  • ACE Conference next year will likely be virtual in some way... Connect, Second Life, etc.

Can Second Life easily stream Flash video?

  • H264 Flash Video, yes. but finicky
  • Quicktime works
  • maybe Video Capture off screen, then recode into Quicktime live -- providers to that
  • If we can get handshake between those two, that'd be a win
  • Dustin Hiatt: We've done live streaming of Connect meetings with Windows Media Encoder.
  • Dustin Hiatt: Haven't tried it with Quicktime.
  • Dustin Hiatt: But this is only one way.

Have you noticed the interaction is more dependent upon the speaker's interaction using Second Life?

  • chat has lots of activity
  • when speaker acknowledges SL participants, very much makes it more engaging

ACE/NETC

  • will be demoing the party in SL as party is streamed to RL party at Des Moines

eXtension National meeting in October

  • Should be able to work with them to try some streaming

Teen Second Life

  • Not too many teens there, and not a lot going on to draw 4-Hers
  • Talk about reconfiguring Teen SL to allow other ages maybe

Ad Hoc Committee

  • Preparing to be able to offer streaming into SL for virtual conferencing
  • if we can get it all together, then we can offer to conference planners, and make it fairly easy
  • Some virtual conferences charge a fee

ACE 2010 Conference

  • Steve Dodrill: We will be meeting in Iowa to discuss what this might look like and Beth will be invited to that session.
  • Likely this conference will be virtual, if held

ACE/NETC 2009 Conference

  • Presentation by LuAnn
  • Presentation by LuAnn and Larry: SL as teaching environment
  • Presentation with Texas A&M and Nebraska: Way to use SL to learn about global ag issues. But they are learning that there are not many Ag issues being handled in SL now. LuAnn will do basic intro to SL section.
  • 15 Min session: how to get started in SL, list of resources, get to fairgrounds, etc. Has added an orientation on Morrill.
