12. What is your state doing regarding external/extramural funding?

Oklahoma

Educators, District and Area Specialists are encouraged to seek extramural funding that fits with their impact teams and/or plans of work and objectives. Internal funding has been made available through joint Extension/Research efforts to fund some initiative team projects.

Arkansas

Staff are encouraged to secure extramural funding as opertunity arises. Internal grants have been made available to encourage grant application and has increased outside applications as well.

Virginia

Agent faculty are being encouraged to obtain external and extramural funding to support programming efforts. Training has been conducted in the past year in regard to foundation accounts, as well as how to work with sponsored programs at the university. During our annual Extension conference, a team from North Carolina State University gave a presentation regarding their efforts and successes at fund development. Extension faculty are evaluated formally on this area of their profession as well.

Florida
We encourage faculty to collaborate with their colleagues (state specialists and other agents) to apply for local, state and national grants. We also encourage agents to work with our Development Department and other sources to obtain private donations that support their local programs.

Georgia

Under the direction of our College Office of Advancement, Rob Cooper and Kristi Hughes, we are working with local donors to set up program resource generation endowments to generate money for local programming. Three counties have recently come on board, two of these with Youth Development Endowments totaling $20,000.

We are providing our Agents training in grantsmanship and grant writing. We also had several of our Intern positions funded through county and/or grant funds.

Kentucky

Many of the agents in our counties are securing grants for programs that they are conducting. The 4-H Foundation has hired a new director to develop funds to support State 4-H activities.

North Carolina

North Carolina has encouraged agents to seek additional funding through grants contracts and donations for many years. We typically get about $6M/yr in county grants and contracts and they are managed locally by county finance departments. In addition to grants we have an Extension Foundation that has established accounts for every county. These accounts can be built with private funds though donations, endowments or other key sources of giving. Some counties have established multiple accounts- one for each program areas. Endowments require a minimum of $15,000 and at that point the annual interest is available for that county Extension unit to use in perpetuity.

Alabama

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System employs a Contracts and Grants Specialist who identifies potential funding opportunities and actively assists Extension agents and specialists with preparing and submitting applications. ACES has also instituted an extramural funding award program which annually presents a cash award to twelve staff who have received significant funding during the fiscal year. In addition senior administrators have given the pursuit of extramural funding a high priority and encourage agents and specialists to apply for grants.

Texas AgriLife Extension

All Extension faculty are encouraged to seek additional resources for programmatic support through external funding sources. Grant funds, funding from municipalities, school districts and other state and governmental agencies provide a significant contribution to Texas AgriLife Extension Service funding stream. These funds comprise approximately 23% of our total budget.

LSU AgCenter

Inventors share proceeds with LSU AgCenter. Principle Investigators receive half of all indirect costs obtained from grants. Grants are included in performance appraisal, promotion and tenure documents.

Tennessee Extension

Ag programs have beengiven a boost with the award of state ag enhancement funds for beef, dairy, goat, nursery, and vineyard farmers. Farmers participate in fee-based Extension Educational programs and are eligible to receive matching funding for improvements to farms production facilities. Counties receive state funding as a result. 93 out of 95 counties have county endowments. About 14% of our funding is from grants and gifts.
