4. What plans and new directions do you intend to pursue in 2010?

University of Kentucky

  • Exploring the use of VPN solutions for counties to give them better access to Campus resources(Active Directory).
  • Working to implement web 2.0 technologies for the College and CES, through the use of wikis, blogs, MS SharePoint, Google Docs and other related technologies.
  • Complete migration of all College web applications to a single login(AD).
  • Research and test Windows 7 and investigate other OS/Hardware options such as Mac OS/Apple.
  • Implementing the use of VMware Server to maximize College server resources.
  • Offer training on social media for CES personnel
  • Make MS Office Communicator server available to CES personnel




LSU AgCenter

  • Hyper V – Continue to implement Microsoft Hyper V for Windows server virtualization
  • SharePoint – Continue to expand SharePoint implementation to include all of the current Intranet
  • GIS – Continue to expand the array of GIS services to the organization
  • Social Media – Continue to explore the integration of popular social media applications and begin to train faculty and staff on their use and benefits
  • HD Compressed Video – Further expand compressed video sites that have HD capabilities
  • Unified Communications – Train employees on the unified communications platform
  • Less Paper Office Initiative – Continue to replace paper HR, Accounting, and Grants/Contracts with electronic versions to reduce paper and allow for remote working arrangements
  • eCommerce – Continue to flesh out a consolidated organization-wide eCommerce solution for selling products and services and accepting donations online.
  • Consolidated reporting – Continue to build consolidated reporting system for federal reports that reduce duplication of effort in terms of data entry by faculty and staff

Alabama Cooperative Extension System:

  • Develop and implement a social media strategy
  • Continue working with departments to expand the use of distance learning technology
  • Redesign the ACES web site to take advantage of higher screen resolution (1024x768 vs. 800x600)
  • Evaluate options for implementing a mobile version of the ACES web site
  • Make major improvements to the online ACES non-tenure-track faculty performance evaluation system
  • Prepare a plan for Windows 7 migration
  • Evaluate and proceed, if feasible, with implementing the ACES Intranet in SharePoint
  • Coordinate with Auburn Office of Information Technology to implement OpenID



University of Tennessee is moving toward:

  • Implemention of SharePoint server for county website content management system. Server system has been purchased is is presently being configured.
  • Change in e-mail system for UTIA staff to MS Exchange, managed centrally by UT system. All campus staff has been migrated with all 750+ off-campus users to be moved September 2009.
  • Additional training for county staff on SUPER system for new staff members with emphasis on Enrollment and Training/Registration.
  • Upgrading computers to min. of 2 GB RAM if not at that level.
  • Prepare for Windows 7 implementation.
  • Working with UT System to implement MS Communicator software for off-campus staff members.




NC State University

  • We are doing a major desktop hardware roll out to county centers. Our first 3-year Apple lease expires in December and counties are enthusiastically reordering.
  • We may be forced to migrate our county employees to Groupwise 7 this year. Central IT has slowed the migration process in order to resolve many outstanding issues first. We and they are looking at alternative solutions.
  • Several internal application development projects are underway or planned, including 1) adding title promotion and professional development plan components to our One Stop Shop system, 2) replacing an older label management application with a new contact management database, 3) revising our learning management system. Several other external projects may or may not happen, depending on funding.
  • Upgrading commercial ISP networks in most of our county centers
  • Social media and web conferencing continue to be popular training topics. We are also starting to offer training on podcasting, iTunesU and eXtension related topics.
  • We have work to do with administration around organizational use of social media, in terms of defining expectations and norms.




Oklahoma State University Extension

  • Capitalize on the new statewide videoconferencing system through the use of in-services (both internal and external audiences), committee meetings (internal), and producer discussions (external).
  • Develop training materials and sessions for our Extension personnel on social media.
  • Develop video training materials and self-guided instructional material using Captivate.
  • Work with Extension professionals to deliver community-based workshops on social media.



Texas AgriLife Information Technology

  • Evaluate and build off-site redundancy and backup capability for the data center and our off-campus research centers
  • Complete evaluation of and implement an enterprise email, calendar and contact initiative across AgriLife programs.
  • Evaluate and improve bandwidth and wide area network reliability
  • Implement a single enterprise anti-virus solution
  • Improve network and security pro-active monitoring
  • Increase staff awareness and use of eXtension tools, particularly the Ask an Expert system
  • Increase staff awareness and skill with using implementing social media tools



Fort Valley State University Information and Technology Area

  • Complete revamp of the College’s Web Site
  • Evaluate remote desktop support solutions for providing technology support for county staff.
  • Implement Online Meeting software
  • Prepare for Windows 7 implementation
  • Continue seeking opportunities for collaboration with government agencies.




Tuskegee University

  • Website Redesign
  • Software upgrades, to include implementation of Windows 7
  • Full transition into cooperating with ACES on videoconferencing project (already started)
  • Continue to promote awareness of social media tools and best practices for extension programming.
  • Have Communications and IT plan buy-in at University level complete
  • Continue development on opportunities for Rural Broadband Initiative opportunities.



UGA CAES OIT

  • Develop a social networking / web 2.0 strategy including policy, best practices, guidlelines, resources, etc
  • Add additional capacity to Griffin Campus data center to address local file capacity and Athens data center DR needs
  • Work with UGA EITS / CTL / and the Equal Opportunity Office to establish comprehensive accessibility policy, best practices, and resource center.
  • Escalate greater integration of IT services into every aspect of CAES operations, strategic, and logistical support.
  • Further develop technology plans for all campuses and operations with the inclusion of core services and rate sheets for expanded IT services
  • Implementation of Windows 7
  • Migration of CAES users to UGA sponsored MS email/calendaring/collaboration hosted solution
