2009 MM International
From Extension Collaborative Wiki
7. Is your state promoting Internationalizing Extension? If so, what activities do you plan on for the current and next programming year?
Georgia
UGA continues to work in Honduras with the Distance Diagnostics through Digital Imaging program. 4 Agents have been involved in this program during this year. We have a USDA-International Science & Education grant that provides funding for Conversational Spanish and Culture course to be taught on the Athens campus during Spring semester. This past spring - 25 CAES and FACS faculty/staff (not all extension) participated, and another course is planned for spring 2010. Participants selected include research and extension faculty and staff representatives from both CAES and FACS at the ‘Absolute Beginner’ level. During the 15 weeks, there are ten lessons directed to learning conversational Spanish interspersed with 5 lessons directed to learning cultural competencies. The cultural competency portion of the course is developed and coordinated by Sharon Gibson, Extension Multicultural Specialist.
Virginia
Not specifically. We do have faculty working on international efforts such as 4-H Character Education partnership with Brazil and international 4-H student exchange programs including IFYE and LABO.
Texas
The Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture provides Extension faculty with significant opportunities related to international Extension education.
Tennessee
No International efforts at this time.
Clemson Extension
Clemson Extension has seven program teams in place - 4H and Youth, Community Development, Food Safety and Nutrition, Agronomic Crops, Forestry and Nutrition, Horticulture, and Livestock & Forages. All agents are assigned to one of these teams as a "primary" team. Each team has some involvement in internationalizing Extension, although some more than others.
LSU AgCenter
Our International Programs Department provides most of the leadership in this area. Individual departments are also actively and independently involved as well. LSU actively and successfully recruits foreign students.
Oklahoma
Extension specialists are currently working with the Oklahoma National Guard on small farm best management practices and techniques that they can utilized upon deployment to other nations. There are also opportunities for faculty and students to participate in international experiences.
Alabama
Some individuals are traveling to other countries on the System Study Leave Policy. The expenses to travel are being paid with outside or grant funds. There is no System wide coordinated effort of International Extension.
Mississippi
Not at this time.
