Random Thoughts for Consideration
In a message of 10/29/09, Terry said:
"ONE PROGRAMMING NOTE TO KEEP IN MIND: The hotel is not close to downtown St. Louis. I know that many of the attendees at the eXtension National Conference were frustrated by this...especially those who didn't have a car or inexpensive way to get downtown and those who had never been to St. Louis. We may want to consider this in our evening programming...a bus trip downtown for a meal? OR not."
Friends of ours, Amanda and Matt Aubuchon, were in St. Louis two weeks ago, and Matt grew up there. They suggested Forest Park, a very large municipal park with a number of "attractions," as a possible venue if ACE wants to do an off-site event for 2010. It would be a fairly short bus ride from the Westport area. Here's what they said after checking out the park on their recent visit:
"The Jewel Box in Forest Park was closed when we were visiting the park (there were brides all over the park getting married and taking pictures), but we peeked in and I'm not sure it's big enough for an ACE function. However, they have a number of buildings in the park, including the art museum, the history museum, and a big ugly-looking reception hall in the visitors center (concrete floor, concrete walls...it's called the Trolley Room and I could absolutely see parking a big trolley in there). Anyway, Forest Park might be worth looking into for a function. They also had a bonfire area! Little picnic tables set up and a bonfire by each one. Ten in all. I thought that was an interesting concept. They must set it up only for special events . . ."
Just a possibility to consider. -- Tom K
