December 8, 2006, SIG Conference Call Notes

Webconferencing Discussion -- Juella Sparks, University of Alaska – Fairbanks, described E-Live, which is similar to Breeze, but voiceover IP one speaker at a time. Bob Rost, Oregon State, said they’ve purchased time on Iowa State’s Breeze, but may join Washington and Idaho for their own system. They just got Polycoms in each county office. Centra is an option several land-grants have. Becky Koch said North Dakota State is probably going to go with WebEx rather than open-source Skype with Festoon. Melanie Jarrett with ABG, Indianapolis, said they use Accenture and WebEx. Breeze uses either VOIP or telephones. Phones cost 19 cents per minute per site.

November 15, 2006, SIG Conference Call Notes

The call for proposals for breakout sessions at the June 15-19, 2007, ACE/NETC conference in Albuquerque will be announced soon. The ACE annual conference is our best opportunity to offer professional development sessions that DEID SIG members and other ACE members can learn and benefit from. Please help us brainstorm ideas for DEID sessions. If you have an idea for a session, please share it. Other DEID SIG members may be able to contribute to what you are planning. The DEID SIG leadership will share all feedback and ideas we receive via the DEID SIG e-mail list. Please respond by Nov. 30 to SIG Vice Chair Bob Rost at bob.rost@oregonstate.edu.

Critique and Awards entries must arrive at ACE headquarters by Jan. 26, 2007. Last year only three entries competed in the DEID categories. Let's have more this year!

The judge for the DEID categories is Margaret (Peggy) Hines. Hines graduated from Morehead (Kentucky) State University with a master’s degree in Communications/Electronic Media in 1996. At MSU she worked with the Office of Distance Learning and with Education faculty to develop foundational knowledge in educational theory, teaching strategies and teaching with technology.

Since 1996 Hines has collaborated with a range of institutions--nationally and internationally--in developing distance learning courses and programs and technology-enhanced communications systems.

In 1998 Hines joined the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University as the developer of the university’s first online degree program. In addition to assisting faculty in developing the curriculum for the new program and helping them learn to teach in the new environment, Hines established the policies and procedures for the program, and nurtured and facilitated a community of practice for the faculty teaching in the program and a learning community for the distance-learning students.

Hines also has been called on as a consultant by educational institutions, governmental agencies, international partners, non-governmental agencies and businesses to provide technical expertise and instructional design services.
