  • SIG officers will schedule monthly conference calls, and will explore the possibility of offering online presentations/professional development training.

SIG Mission

The mission of the ACE Diversity Special Interest Group (SIG) is to promote and support programs by all ACE members to communicate with diverse audiences.

SIG Goals

Goal 1: Increase membership, participation, and strengthen communication with members

Both the newsletter and the wiki will be used not only to keep members informed, but to encourage and invite them to participate fully and actively.

1. Newsletter

  • New sections will be added: “Getting Personal,” featuring award recipients and members, and perhaps polls, among others.
  • The newsletter will be sent as text in an e-mail, as a PDF file attachment, and posted in the wiki.
    • Responsibility: Marusela Anders will lead the effort to add new sections to the newsletter, as well as continue to prepare and send it. Ariel Ginsburg will post the newsletter on the wiki.
    • Timeline: by the end of November, 2008.

2. Wiki

  • The wiki site will be updated and new materials (diversity-related ACE presentations, Social Responsibility materials, Diversity Catalyst group presentations, and Web resources) will be added.
    • Responsibility: Ariel Ginsburg and Tom Merrill will work on updating and maintaining the SIG’s wiki.
    • Timeline: This is an ongoing process. Will be updated as needed.

3. Invitation to ACE members

  • SIG leadership will survey the SIG's members to determine who belongs to their institution’s Diversity Catalyst Team. They will be invited to share/contribute articles, presentations, etc. that can be useful to the group.
    • Responsibility: Myriam Grajales-Hall and Ariel Ginsburg will send an e-mail to the ACE membership. The invitation will also be made via the SIG’s quarterly newsletter.
    • Timeline: By June 2009.

4. Monthly SIG Officers Conference Calls

  • The SIG’s officers initiated monthly teleconferences and agreed to continue with this practice.
    • Responsibility: Marusela Anders kindly offered to set it up.
    • Timeline: On a monthly basis.

Goal 2: Partner with the Writing SIG to offer training on “Global & Plain English” during the 2009 conference in Iowa

  • Collaborate with the Writing SIG to offer a presentation as part of a pre- or post-conference workshop in Des Moines, Iowa.
    • Responsibility: Ariel Ginsburg contacted Writing SIG chair Barb McBreen to present the idea. Myriam Grajales-Hall will approach Bill Watson from Texas A&M to ask him to present an extended version of the session he presented at Traverse City.
    • Timeline: Will work with the Writing SIG timeline.

Goal 3: Expand and improve SIG’s Mission Statement

  • The group will work to improve and expand the mission statement so it includes increasing the diversity of ACE membership, as well as other important core elements such as recognizing, connecting, amplifying, promoting, appreciating and advancing.
    • Responsibility: The chair, vice chair, and two vice-chair-elects will craft the new mission statement and submit it for approval by the SIG members.
    • Timeline: By the end of December 2008.

Three-year professional development plan

Over the next three years, the SIG will explore two new opportunities:

  • Offer professional development training sessions on diversity issues, as part of the eXtension Professional Development opportunities made available to various Communities of Practice. The group will also look into using the eXtension collaborative site more, to share information and resources and to communicate with all ACE members.
  • Expand the current concept and language of the diversity categories---targeted publics---for the C&A competition, to increase and diversify the range of options and to possibly add diversity as part of the judging criteria in other categories. Other SIGs will be approached to get a sense of what they do and how we can expand this concept to offer more options.

Diversity SIG Surveys Members on Diversity Challenges

During the 2005 ACE meeting, members of the Diversity SIG discussed how to better serve our members within the SIG, as well as other ACE members.

As a result, the ACE Diversity SIG Member Survey was born. The survey, which was sent via email in fall 2005, asked members to share any questions, concerns, and ideas they had on diversity in the agricultural communications workplace. There were many great recommendations made by our members, which we hope to begin working on soon, as well as expanding this survey to include all ACE members.

Download the pdf with results of this survey.
