Update on 4 current SL projects&lt;br&gt;
Suggestions for future projects&lt;br&gt;
Steering Committee needed?

===There are currently 4 eXtension projects in SL===

====1. Virtual State Fair: ====
Contributors: LuAnn Phillips, Larry Havenstein, Kevin Gamble, SL volunteers

The SLeddie competition we planned to enter was cancelled. We have updated and checked all the fair exhibits. Content vendors for most land grant universities have been added, also content at the animal barns. A new sim is being added to the west, connected by a bridge. It is reserved for future projects. We will promote the Fair in SL to generate user traffic from 8-23 to 8-31 to reflect RL fair season.

* Volunteer if you can help even a few hours! Contact Thynka Little or luann.phillips@extension.org
* Ohio State University -- one of the depts is doing its first initiative in SL. Peg meeting with them on Monday! Encouraging them to take students to our Virtual Fair for recreation and exploration.
* All Encouraged to come to Virtual Fair and invite others in Extension

====2. Family Caregiving Live-ability house and builder’s competition====

Contributors: Deb Sellers, Sarah Kirby, LuAnn Phillips, SL volunteers

The goal of this initial project is: To raise public awareness of design features and assistive technology that can make it possible to remain in the home with physical or cognitive challenges due to aging, illness, or disability.

Information is available here:

and here

Update: Demo House will be done by 8-18, except for the garden which will be done by 8-23. New sim ready week of 8-18?
* Will blend with accessible garden and the Demo house
* LuAnn is getting things donated. Yay!
* Wheelies group. Gimp Girls group. -- we hope to get people from these groups involved with judging and other participation.
* http://digicmb.blogspot.com/2008/08/virtual-ability-island-grand-opening.html -- the island we were just talking about

Entry packet by 9/4, for conferences (SLCC and Galaxy) Register by 10/1, judging 11/1 - ? November is National Family Caregiver Month, tie to that Event for announcing winners, mixed reality? (in RL and SL)

====3. Food Safety Exhibit, Alabama Cooperative Extension ====

Contributors: Kristin Woods-Williams (GigEm Agrawal SL), Regional Extension Agent
Sondra Portis (Sondra Lorefield SL)-student intern
LuAnn Phillips

Part 1: Fair Booth with information about food safety
* Add ideas on how to connect with people who would want to work with this to the wiki!
* Machinima may help to share this with others -- Kevin
* Ideas come from different places, and we need to be open and see how they fit with CoPs or other connections

Part 2: Germ House interactive sim
* There will be a new CoP on Indoor Air Quality, funded by federal govt.
* Also new CoP on Energy Efficient Housing

Update: Sondra is working independently. She will make faster progress if we buddy her with a mentor to work side by side in real time.

* Need a talent pool willing to help/work in SL.
** Larry Havenstein, Kansas State
** Peg Shear

* Everyone is welcome!

====4. Teen SL, Dare to Be You, Colorado State University Coop Ext====
Contributors: Jan Miller-Heyl, Dare To Be You Program Director
Renee Podunovich ( Verbena Quinnell SL) Dare to be You Staff member
LuAnn Phillips, Kevin Gamble

Middle School youth will meet weekly over the course of the year, under supervision of staff and parents, to develop meeting space on Bailey and do projects related to teen sexuality issues.

Update: Kevin has an avatar transferred to Bailey. Renee’s is ready to go. LuAnn has her background check done, but will send her avatar later. There are still obstacles to getting the teens registered.

* Setting on the new client that gives you choice on inital log in screen to other grids. Teen Grid is one of the choices.
* Client v. 1.20
* Important point: Bailey is an open island... any teens can visit Bailey, and they'll be informed that adults are there, and who they are. We will not be able to IM any teen. Only able to use chat. This will make communication with our groups more difficult. Chat is only 20 feet, shouting is 90 meters. Not a good way to broadcast information.
* Teen grid needs interesting things to do!
* Wondering if some of Virtual State Fair could be cloned and taken to Bailey.
* Adults may not share items with teens in open island model, ie Notecards, etc.

* Dare to be You is having hard time signing up youth, because parents of low income families don't have credit cards, and some cell phones are not on Linden's approved identity list. Another choice is faxing birth certificates. So kids that showed up have not been able to be registerd :(
* LuAnn will try to contact one of the Linden's for support in this area.
* Parents cannot sign up, but will be there with their teen looking over their shoulder.

===Suggestions for future projects===
* something that grows... plant, reacts to sunlight,
* reach out to other CoPs about SL and see if they have project ideas that might be feasible
* Food: farm to consumer (animal to butcher shop to table) (dairy, agonomy, etc.)
* &quot;How did this food get on my table?&quot;
* Funding may be available from many food producer groups, after we have examples

=== Galaxy III Conference ===
* Indianapolis, IN, on Sept. 16-18, 2008
* eXtension has booths there, at least one is for Second Life! Network, talk with others in the booth
* LuAnn, Peg, Beth, Kevin, Deb (Wed-Thu),
* Briefing session topics at http://about.extension.org/wiki/Galaxy_III_Briefing_Room_Submissions Please add descriptions!
* Briefings - Wed and Thurs
* Booth - Tuesday and Wednesday
* Internet access will be available. Big monitor.
* Invite others who will be at Galaxy to help!! or at least to stop by
* Registrations due - final day TOMORROW (Aug. 15)</content>
