1. Award of Excellence Winner Florita Montgomery
We congratulate Florita Stubbs Montgomery, Ed.D., Extension Communications Specialist and Associate Professor, West Virginia University, for winning the Diversity SIG Award of Excellence. She is thrilled to finally have won the award after several nominations.
“Receiving the Award of Excellence from the Diversity SIG is an honor and a challenge. Thank you for both. Receiving this acknowledgement obviously is an honor. I truly appreciate being recognized for the diversity work I've tackled through the years. But I also accept the award as a positive challenge. With this award as my inspiration, I will continue walking—and helping others walk—the Pathway to Diversity, even when the road gets a little uncomfortable.” —Florita Montgomery.
Florita will be presenting with LaRae Donnellan and Rebecca McGovney-Ingram during the upcoming annual conference. Their session, Recognizing Media Frames: Understanding White Privilege (Part II), is scheduled for Wednesday, June 11, at 1:15 p.m.
2. Welcome New SIG Member Lauren Rouse
Lauren Rouse is a Master of Science student in Agricultural Communication and Journalism at Texas A&M University. She was an International Studies-Communication and French major at Texas A&M in undergrad, and received the Certificate in Advance International Affairs from the George Bush School of Government and Public Service. Although she is still trying to focus her research for her thesis, she is hoping to research the benefits/pitfalls of undergraduate study abroad programs for Ag Communication and Journalism students.
Aside from academics, she loves to travel and learn about other cultures. If you are different from her, she enjoys getting to know you. She lived in Paris, France, for three months in 2005 and loved it. She sees herself living in a vineyard as an ex-pat sometime later in her life. She also likes playing around with photography and design programs.
She was born in Houston, Texas; lived in Shreveport, Louisiana, for a few years; and has lived in College Station, Texas, since she was 12 years old. She thought she would have left this town by now, but the academic programs at Texas A&M keep attracting her. She can be reached at LRouse@aged.tamu.edu.
Welcome, Lauren!
3. ACE Sponsors Book Drive at Annual Conference
When you are packing up your beach towels for this summer’s ACE Annual Meeting, don’t forget to throw in a couple of books…and not just to read on the beach. Join ACE as we fight illiteracy with a book drive benefiting the Grand Traverse Area Literacy Council (GTALC).
For more than 30 years, GTALC has been promoting literacy in a four-county area around Grand Traverse, Michigan, with programs targeting youth, adults, individuals with dyslexia, and those for whom English is a second language. Books of any type are welcome, either new or slightly used, and can be donated at the boxes provided at the Annual Meeting registration desk. For more information, visit http://www.gtalc.org/index.html
