1. Message from our Chair

Hello Diversity SIG Members!

I hope everyone is having a great fall and looking forward to the holiday season. There are several updates I have to share with you, from both the SIG level and from ACE.

We submitted our Fall SIG Report last month highlighting as goals the items members discussed during our meeting this summer (website, ENewsletter, etc.) During the October SIG Leaders Conference Call, I updated the other SIGs on what we as a SIG are doing, specifically touching on our new C&A categories.

Deadlines for the 2008 ACE Annual Meeting are starting to pop up on the horizon; proposals for the conference are due January 15th. Please submit a proposal for this meeting so that the Diversity SIG can be well represented again at this year's meeting.. And as always, we encourage you to submit to the Journal of Applied Communication (research pieces, reviews, etc).

Rebecca L. McGovney-Ingram Diversity SIG Chair

2. Diversity News from Oregon State University

Oregon has just become a Change Agent State for Diversity. Our own Ariel Ginsburg was asked by her department head to be on the Diversity Catalyst Team for Oregon State University. She would like to hear from anyone receiving our SIG newsletter whose land-grant university has already been working with the Change Agent State program--- experiences, insight, successes, challenges, etc. You can contact her at ariel.ginsburg@oregonstate.edu

4. ACE Development Grant

Colleagues,

From ACE headquarters, just a reminder that it is that time of year again when ACE members can apply for an ACE Professional Development grant of up to $1,500.

Your proposal should include your professional development plan, anticipated outcomes and how the grant will enhance your development opportunities. You should describe your service/activities with ACE and your involvement in the profession. The project should be completed within the upcoming year. Individual applicant must have been a member of ACE for at least three years. Team applications must have a lead person who has been a member of ACE for at least three years.

You need to submit your proposal, along with a letter of support from your supervisor, to ACE Headquarters, by email, to ace@ifas.ufl.edu by December 3, 2007. The Development Fund Committee will review applications, and a decision will be made by January 11, 2008.

For everyone considering this great deal, all you have to remember is that the Development Fund Committee will give weight to those applications that: have broad application so other members may benefit from professional development experience; generate outcomes valuable to both the applicant and the profession; develop new knowledge and information in our discipline; apply concepts or technology in innovative ways; demonstrate teamwork, particularly across disciplinary lines; and reflect the applicant’s previous service to ACE. Amounts awarded vary based on need and funds available in a given year. To send in your grant application, and to learn more, go to the ACE website at http://www.aceweb.org/leadersh/grants.html or contact Development Fund Chair Holly Young at holly.young@unh.edu.
