Step-by-step guide to Using Basic Markup in MediaWiki

MediaWiki Markup

From any page in the wiki, you may select Edit from the blue Views box on the right of the page. All text from the page will be displayed in an editing box, with a toolbar (11 small buttons) above the text box. These Toolbar buttons automatically execute MediaWiki markup on your text. The following list describes each of the 11 options.

  • highlight the text that want to make bold, then click on the B
  • highlight the text that you want italicized, then click on the I
  • highlight the text that represents a link internal to the wiki, (that is, a link to another page on the same website), then click on the Ab
  • highlight the text that represents a link external to the wiki, (that is, a link to a completely different website), then click on the Globe icon
  • highlight the text that you want to appear as a level 2 headline, or subsection, then click on the A icon
  • embedded image
  • media file link
  • mathematical formula
  • highlight the text that you want to appear as you see it, that is ignore wiki formatting characters, then click on the W with the line through it
  • to insert your name, date and time stamp, click on the cursive signature icon
  • to insert a full horizontal line, click on the thick dash - (please use only sparingly)
