Equipment Needs

While not required to participate, a headset with a microphone will make participating much richer
Microphone and speakers or headset - if you want to use Elluminate's audio.

  • Camera if you want to send video (make sure it is compatible with your operating system)

Audio Wizard

Configures your sound input and output

  • Tools -> Audio -> Audio Setup Wizard

Once you have your audio configured, you can use the audio module to control the volume of your input (microphone) and output (speakers) by dragging the sliders.

Click on the microphone button to turn on the microphone. Click it a second time to turn it off.

The moderator determines the maximum number of simultaneous speakers allowed.

Online equivalent to body language

In this medium, others (including the instructor/moderator) can't see you. You have to give feedback in other non-distractive ways.

Below the Participants list are several buttons to facilitate giving feedback. Use these liberally - depending of course on the speaker...

  • "Raise hand" - alerts the moderator that you have something to say.
    • A number will appear by your name in the participants list indicating the order that your hand was raised.
    • To lower your hand, click on the "Raise hand" a second time.
  • "Laughter" and "Confusion" - give the speaker some feedback if they something you think was funny or confusing.
    • These will flash for a few seconds and then go away
  • "Applause" and "Disapproval" - again, give more feedback to the speaker.
    • These will flash for a few seconds and then go away
  • "Step away from the class" - let the others know that you are not paying attention so they won't wait for you to answer a question.
    • Click on this button when you return.

Answering questions.

On the button bar, there may be (at the presenter's option) buttons that allow you answer yes/no, faster/slower, A/B/C, A/B/C/D or A/B/C/D/E. These can be used by the presenter and a summary of everyone's answers can be displayed in the whiteboard.

Your answer will be shown in the participants table.

The Chat window

This is a great place to share links, ask and answer questions - without interrupting.

You can carry on a conversation with someone else in the conference by sending to just that one individual. This would be the equivalent of whispering to them - and is less distracting to the rest of the participants.

Note: the moderators can see the 'private' conversations.

The Whiteboard

This is where the presenter's information is shown. If they allow, the participants can edit the whiteboard as well.

Use the buttons to the left of the whiteboard to edit.

Sharing Your Desktop

Click on the "Begin Sharing Your Desktop" button to share an application window or the whole desktop.

  • The application must be running and not minimized.
  • Check the "Share Entire Desktop" button to share the entire desktop.
  • When you are sharing, the whiteboard disappears and the button bar moves to the left side of the Elluminate Live! window.
  • When sharing:
    • click on the "Stop sharing" button (same as "Share Entire Desktop" button) to stop sharing
    • click on the "Pause sharing" button to freeze what others are seeing. While this button is selected, you can manipulate windows, etc. and then click on the button again to resume sharing.
    • click the "Minimize Main Window" button to convert view to the "Mini-Controller" which just shows the button bar. Restore the main window from your dock (Mac) or task bar (Windows)
    • click the "Show application sharing preview window" button to see a thumbnail of what is being shared.
  • The moderator can request control of your desktop and control your

mouse and keyboard.

Sharing Video

If you have a video camera connected to your computer and the moderator has enabled video support, you can share your video.

Click on the "Show the video window" button.

Use the "Devices" button to select the appropriate camera.

Click on "Transmit" to start sending your video.
