Public Official Leadership Sharing Polycom (Teleconference) Planning Phone Conference – Friday, July 27, 2007
Notie Lansford, Jeri Marxman, Carroll Welte, Phyllis Schoenholz
In planning for a fall Polycom for Extension staff who present Public Official Leadership training. What are the goals for the Polycom? • What is it that we have that we can share with each other, what is out there and what are they planning to develop? And how can we share it? Where do we head next? o Eric Scorsone originally from KY – not at Michigan State – who did a study 5 years ago about what different extension systems were doing in the arena of training local government. – Michigan State 517.353.9460 – Jeri is willing to contact him to see what his research found – and then what needs to updated….can it become a part of a national study – and Carroll stated that possibly we can be a part of national research. Notie remembered seeing a copy of it and would like to see more detail.
• Would like to see a sharing of topics and activities – a clearing house of sorts for Public Official curricula/workshop materials. It may logically be e-extension o Examples might include Public Finance 101 – something that Notie is working on • Carroll will talk to Dan Cotton – to ask • Who is developing leadership (related to Public Official training). • What steps do we need to take to develop such a clearing house/data base. • How to develop it/set it up? • What materials can be placed there
• Notie would like to find out what are the “delivery systems” - two fold 1. Is delivery in person or by distance Ed methods? Online, DVD. Etc a. What is the time frame? b. Personnel contact mechanism> 2. Do people develop the materials themselves or do they contract out to other trainers? Does Extension (like OK) develop and deliver? Or contract out like Mississippi. a. Notie • Notie – will get contact information for MS Extension contact -- to be included in Polycom invitation. Mac McLaurin is the head and the only one still working there that I have ever visited with. Most of what I know about their program I learned from a previous faculty member. He moved into private enterprise some years ago. I hope McLaurin will be interested in networking with us. http://cgt.msstate.edu/faculty_staff.html
• How can I take existing extension programs, such as Leadership training, conflict resolution etc., that already have been developed by Extension staff (possibly in other departments – FCS) and then be able to offer them to county officials?
a. Notie – developed at the request at the county clerks – Customer Service…..pulled information together and developed scenarios – taken from retail Customer Service program and customized for courthouses – delivered
b. Jeri – does customer service in the courthouse…. Illinois delivery system includes:
• County workshops
• Regional training
• Monthly teleconference (computer and audio conferencing) – this spring have participation – around 70 counties participating – it is very convenient – but not their preferred method – They get very good information and the speaker only has to present once – not 70 times.
o Jeri and Carroll – would like to see Notie’s economic development course for public officials…..developed by Mike Woods etc. Notie will share.
• Possibly could work to share In-Service training by Breeze – PPT and voice. Actually go to a Website to use those technologies for delivery. The training is then archived. o Carroll would like to see an evaluation developed – and online form (possibly Survey Monkey) so the presenter can have feedback. (I almost think Breeze has that capability – I know there is online polling on questions.) This could lead to possible national data being compiled -- for long term indicators. Extension administration would like that for the Federal report o • Need to know what technologies people have before the Polycom. Are they fire walled?
Best date for Polycom – week of October 22nd. o Phyllis - will contact folks from last time to email out an invitation for the Polycom o Also send out information to the Regional centers – NE, NC, S, W, etc. o Phyllis will also contact Beth Birnsthil to see if there is an Extension Administrative listserv to connect with – to extend invitations. o Also use NACDEP contacts and let them email out invitations
Carroll, Phyllis & Jeri – will try to do their assigned contacts before Friday, August 3 – and then Phyllis will send out invitation to join – with agenda – to entice participation.
Time for another conference call -=- Another phone conference Aug 22 – 2:00 Jeri will be in Notie’s office in Oklahoma.
