Searching Messages With Mozilla Mail

Have you ever wished you could find an E-mail message that you know you have saved into a folder, but you just could not find it? Mozilla Mail has a search feature which will allow you to search through messages in any mail folder using search criteria and keywords. Once messages are found, you can open them, file them, or delete them.

Using the search feature is easy and can save you time. To begin your search, start in the Mozilla Mail window, then follow these steps:

Select: Tools -> Search Messages... to get the "Search Messages" dialog window, as shown below.

Select the folder where you want to focus your search by clicking on the small triangle at the far right of the statement "Search for messages in". A list of all of your folders will appear. Navigate to ans select the folder you wish to search. If you check the box "Search Subfolders", then the selected folder and all of its subfolders will be searched.
After choosing the folder, select the "Match" option you want. You are given two choices, "Match all of the following" or "Match any of the following". You are then provided with drop-down menus that allow you to set search criteria. The first drop-down menu will allow you to select where in the message to search for information: the subject, sender, body, date, status, to, cc to or cc, age in days or designate your own field by selecting the "customize" option. The second drop-down allows you define if the keyword you choose will be contained or not contained in your previous selection.
Type in a keyword or phrase in the blank space following the drop-down menus.
Click "More" to add additional criteria and "Fewer" to remove them.
Click "Search" to begin, or "Clear Search" to erase your keywords and other selected entries.

If no matches were found that meet your criteria a "no matches found" message will be displayed.

If matches were found the results will be displayed in a list. From this list, messages can be opened, filed using the buttons below.

To close the Search Messages window, click "close" on the right hand side of the window.

To open a message: Highlight the desired message by left mouse clicking on it. Then click on "Open Message Folder". The selected message will load in your mail window.

To file a message: Highlight the desired message(s). Then click "File in" and select the message folder you wish for it to be moved to.

To delete a message: Highlight the desired message(s). Then click "Delete Message".
