Notes from the October 15, 2008 NC IPM Conference Call

Attending

This was a problem since Mary Meyer failed to get a conference call that would allow more than 12 callers. Next time, Mary promises to do better and apologies to the callers who left the call. SORRY!

Calling in were: Monica David, Karen Jeannette, Bob Mugaas, Ron Smith, Rhoda Burrows, Ann Streich, Celeste Welty, Susan Mahr, Lynnae Jess, Mary Meyer, Michelle Grawbowski.

  • Bob and Michelle reported that the Minnesota MG IPM Curriculum is being written for voice-over online as well as live presentation for January 09. It is assumed that many other states, all of North Central, can use this since it will cover basic IPM information. Mary will ask Julie and Dean to give the group an update via the listserv.
  • Mary noted the NGA Environmental Lawn and Garden Survey was sent to Working Group members via email. We discussed the questions and information on the survey and agreed the info is great, but not necessarily IPM information in which our group is interested.
  • The listserv is up and working, new members can be added any time.

Turning Point and Survey Monkey Surveys

Dean Herzfeld was noted as someone doing Turning Point surveys in his PAT meetings. No others noted collecting IPM information currently via Turning Point. Could Turning Point be used to compare MG before and after IPM knowledge in conjunction with the MG IPM Curriculum project that Julie and Dean are doing? Mary will follow up with Julie and Dean. Michelle pointed out that Survey Monkey is a great tool for getting a wide variety of information in a short amount of time.Monica noted the issues of properly wording the questions and a large number of MG still do not use the internet from an 07 survey she did with survey monkey. Tom Bartholomay (MN Evaluation) can be a great asset in developing Survey Monkey questions. It was agreed that conducting a Survey Monkey MGIPM survey would give us a baseline level of information on the general knowledge of MG and IPM. This, in addition to pre and post MG survey questions in the curriculum, could provide us with an awareness of general MG and new MG IPM knowledge.

We then viewed and discussed the EarthKind webpage template developed by Karen Jeannette: [1].

Is this website development a priority for our group? We discussed the site maintenance and who would do that, how would information be added and reviewed? Would other regions of the country be interested in this sustainable info for their region? Is the EarthKind TM available to us? Would people find the EarthKind page on the eXtension site? Karen pointed out the public finds eXtension now by googling questions and gardening info). Rhoda suggested we complete a survey monkey to give us baseling info, but we also needed to focus on an outward or educational aspect for our group and a website would do that.

Mary noted that the Working Group had only spent a small amount of our $30,000 grant. Karen Jeannette was willing to work and develop a survey vai survey monkey. NOTE: through 9/26/08 invoices total $3,719. Lynne pointed out that the RFP for 09-10 Working Group proposals are due November 14, 2008.

TO BE DONE

• Mary will contact Don Wilkerson at Texas A&M to verify what we can or cannot use from their EarthKind site. • Karen Jeannette will develop questions for survey monkey for use in a NC MG baseline knowledge survey. She will email them to the listserv for editing and work with Tom B and Carol Pilcher on final development. • Mary will ask Julie and Dean for follow up on the MG Curriculum to be posted on the listserv, including whether or not MG pre and post IPM knowledge questions can be part of the curriculum • Susan, Rhoda and Mary will need to decide about applying for the next year for the Working Group grant. • Next conference call: November 2008.
