Titles and Why They Matter part 2
From Extension Collaborative Wiki
As we go over to Google, let’s take a moment to remind you of your activity of going to the search engine and testing your search terms. Hopefully, this next little demonstration will illustrate why that is such an important step to do before you select your article titles.
We’ll start off by entering our search terms in the text box on the Google homepage. For our first search, we use the exact same terms that we used on Wikipedia when searching for the article. As you see, Google returned for us the article that we searched for on Wikipedia as its number two hit.
Now let’s do one last search, and this time we’ll just change one of our keywords from models to systems; so instead of having three of our keywords in the title of the article, now we’ll have just one word, prediction. Now we’ll see what it’s returned us on this first Google page, even though we are searching for basically the same concept, hurricane prediction systems, that our article is nowhere to be found on the page. Now I’ll skip ahead here to the eighth page, where you’ll see that our article finally does appear.
I hope that this demonstration has highlighted the great importance of being precise in selecting keywords for your articles. It’s one of the most important things that you’ll do when creating new content, and it’s also one of the very first.
It’s your turn now, to use the tools, to go in and select the keywords that you’ll be using within your article. We’ll look forward to your posting them on your user page over the next week.
